Your explore page shows you content similar to posts you like or accounts that you already follow. By showing you different accounts, it gives you some suggestions for new accounts to follow.

Following people on Instagram
There are different ways that you can follow people on Instagram. By going onto the explore page, there is a search bar at the top where you can search names to find accounts to follow. This is useful if you are looking for the accounts of people you know as well as celebrities that you wish to follow. Also, as previously mentioned, your explore pages shows different pictures and videos that are from accounts that you don’t follow but might be interested in.

This is a good way to find new accounts to follow too. Once you go onto the profile of an account, there is an option to ‘follow’. Once you select this, if the account is public you will be able to follow the account straight away. If the account is private, this will change to ‘requested’ and it will be up to the account holder whether they accept or not.
